Members of the Mormon Church are expected to donate money to the Church regularly. Specifically tithing and fast offerings. Fast offerings are monthly donations that are separate from tithing and typically coincide with the monthly ritual of abstaining from food and water for 24 hours (fasting). It is generally understood that the money donated should, at a minimum, represent the amount of money saved by skipping meals for those 24 hours and the funds are generally used to fund the welfare needs of local members.
